WHY URUGUAY?

"Interested in bigger cichlids from South and Central America and, to a lesser extent, in freshwater turtles, I have been on three Uruguay trips since 2010 that covered big parts of the country: East, Northeast, North and the region around Montevideo. Two of these trips were heavy on fish collecting, while on the third one the participants were a bunch of field-herpers, keen on seeing (and photographing) turtles and snakes in their natural environment. So, I have some experience and dare to say: field-trips with Felipe almost inevitably turn into amazing success stories!

We saw everything that is rare and famous: Crenicichla celidochilus, C. missioneira, C. minuano, Gymnogeophagus tiraparae and even one of my favorites, "Geophagus" brasiliensis: enormous big specimens, perfect for pictures and small ones, good for transport. Even more impressive was the multitude of "herps" that we saw, among them the different species of turtles, some of them crepuscular and shy animals (like Acanthochelys spixii), that can't be found easily, and many colorful snakes that amazed even me, who is no snake guy at all. I've done field trips to a good number of tropical countries, like Gabon, Bolivia and Cameroon, and know how difficult it is to spot those animals in the wild and take good pictures. Uruguay turned out to be the most successfull field-herping trip I have participated in so far. I strongly recommend Felipe's trips to field-herpers, too, and not only to aquarists.

Such success can only be achieved because of Felipe's deep knowledge of the country (not to forget Pedro, the driver, who never overlooks a snake, spider or turtle that intends to cross the road). You may be an experienced photographer or collector who has made many trips, but even then you will only see a small part of the animals you see with Felipe. No matter how good you are, you don't know the country as good as he does.

Finally, one has to mention how easy it is to bring some of the collected fishes back home: Felipe does the paperwork, including the veterinary assessment that is needed to import live fishes into some countries. He can even help you to pack the fishes and shows amazing skills in performing this art!

As far as I am concerned, I surely will travel to Uruguay again! There are not too many other opportunities to perform such well-organized and almost inevitably successful field trips that I know of!"
